The museum houses Spanish, Dutch and Italian masters. The modern extension, designed by the architect and winner of the Pritzker Prize, Rafael Moneo, integrates the baroque cloister of the former neighbouring monastery. After being destroyed by Napoleon’s troops and having fallen into a state of ruin over the course of time, the remaining stones were individually removed, restored and used within the construction of the new complex.

The RUNTAL JET-X radiator, which is installed in the public rooms of the museum, lends modest support to the interaction of historic and modern elements.
